MANILA — Two men were shot dead at a polling station near Manila, but special elections in the Philippines’ most violence-prone districts were generally quiet Saturday.
A policeman and a bystander were killed by gunmen who invaded an elementary school in Quezon province, police said. The elections were being held in scattered areas for more than 200,000 voters who were stopped by violence from taking part in nationwide congressional voting on May 11.
Candidates backed by President Corazon Aquino won heavily in the earlier voting, and Saturday’s voting was not expected to have much impact.
