Local News in Brief : Pilot Mistakenly Lands Ultra-Light in Ocean
A Sun Valley man inadvertently landed an ultra-light aircraft Saturday morning in the ocean off Malibu Beach, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department reported.
The pilot, identified as Ron Russell, was not hurt but the craft was damaged slightly when it hit the water about 20 to 30 yards from shore, Lt. Bill McSweeney said.
“He was coming down lower than he should have,†McSweeney said. “There must have been a down draft, and he went down.â€
William Dulla of Newport Beach, a friend of Russell who was flying nearby in another ultra-light craft, landed on the deserted beach after he saw Russell go down, McSweeney said.
