Screenwriters: If you’re thinking of somehow using the Gary Hart-Donna Rice scenario, keep in mind that it’s been done before . . . in 1916!

In Universal’s “Half a Rogue,” a group of Democrats unearth evidence that an actress has spent the night in the apartment of a Republican mayoral candidate.

Actually, the actress had stayed the night because of a fainting spell, but . . . the newspapers reported an illicit rendezvous.

The film climaxed with the candidate beating up the reporter who wrote the erroneous story. Oh, and the public--which never believed those nasty accounts--elected him anyway.
