Goldberg, Burrow Play for NCAA Title

ATHENS, Ga. — Dan Goldberg of Michigan defeated another unranked player Friday to win a berth in the singles finals of the 103rd NCAA men’s tennis tournament.
Goldberg will play No. 7 Andrew Burrow of Miami today for the championship.
Burrow defeated Mark Kaplan of UC Irvine, 7-6, 2-6, 6-1, while Goldberg beat Olivier Lorin of Oklahoma, 6-4, 2-6, 6-1.
Goldberg, unseeded for the tournament, is Michigan’s No. 2 singles player. Pro star Jimmy Connors, playing for UCLA in 1971, was the last player not ranked No. 1 among his teammates to reach the final.
In semifinal doubles action, Julian Barham and Darren Yates of UC Irvine defeated Rich Benson and Greg Van Emburgh of Kentucky, 6-2, 2-6, 7-5, and Rick Leach and Scott Melville of USC beat Kent Kinnear and Vince VanGelderen of Clemson, 7-6, 6-1.
Barham and Yates will meet Leach and Melville following the singles championship.
