MOVIES - May 7, 1987

The Cannes Film Festival opens today in the south of France, and numerous celebrities who stayed away from last year’s festival because of terrorism in Europe are expected this year, among them Academy Award-winner Paul Newman (bringing his version of Tennessee Williams’ “The Glass Menagerie”), Diane Keaton (who will show her directorial debut, “Heaven”) and Mia Farrow (who will represent “Radio Days” while the film’s writer-director, Woody Allen, skips the festival as in the past). Also attending will be Mickey Rourke and Faye Dunaway, starring in director Barbet Schroeder’s “Barfly,” and Norman Mailer, who will present his second film, “Tough Guys Don’t Dance,” starring Ryan O’Neal and Isabella Rossellini. “Aria,” a 10-segment British film of 10 of opera’s more famous arias--and directed by, among others, Ken Russell, Bruce Beresford and Jean-Luc Godard--closes the festival.
