It’s no surprise that “Top Gun†continues to lead the Billboard magazine videocassette sales chart, since Paramount did sell 2.5 million copies to distributors and retailers. But its long-term dominance of the rental chart wasn’t expected. Even such rental favorites as “The Fly,†“Aliens†and “Stand By Me†haven’t been able to topple “Top Gun.†“Ferris Bueller’s Day Off†may do it, though--it’s roaring up the rental chart, moving to No. 6 in its second week. “Legal Eagles,†which also has the potential to be the No. 1 rental, is doing very well but, surprisingly, hasn’t cracked the Top Five on the rental chart. It moved up just one notch, to No. 6. “Soul Man,†aided by an expensive media campaign, is the No. 9 rental and seems headed for the Top Five. Other sales charts: “Sleeping Beauty†is still the No. 1 kidvid cassette; “Bon Jovi†is the leading music cassette; “Golf My Way With Jack Nicklaus†heads the recreational sports chart.
