Shoemaker, Whittingham Win Again
Favored Barbarina, ridden by Bill Shoemaker, drove to the lead in the upper stretch Friday and won by one length in the $61,550 Great Lady M. Stakes for older fillies and mares at Santa Anita.
Barbarina covered about 6 1/2 furlongs down the hillside turf course in 1:15 3/5 and earned $34,550 for the victory. She is trained by Charlie Whittingham.
Whittingham and Shoemaker have combined to win nine stakes at the Santa Anita meeting.
Wistful Tune, ridden by Fernando Toro, finished second, a nose in front of Fairways Girl, ridden by Chris McCarron.
Barbarina paid $6, $4.20 and $3.60; Wistful Tune returned $6 and $4.60, and Fairways Gal paid $4.60.
