Beverly Hills : Panel on School Aid Named
The City Council has appointed a 15-member committee to determine whether a limited charter amendment should be placed on the ballot to make it easier for the city to give direct financial assistance to the school district.
A charter change must be approved by a majority of the voters.
The proposed change would give the city a legal mechanism to make direct payments to the school district. The city currently pays the school district $4 million a year under an agreement to lease such school facilities as auditoriums, libraries and playgrounds.
The members of the committee include: Melvin Spitz, Richard Morganstern, Chester Firestein, Jack Freeman, Betty Harris, Stephen Kravit, Helene Lederman, Cynthia Norian, Judy Okun, Robert Perlberg, Vicki Reynolds, Gloria Seiff, John B. Simon, Richard Stone and Abe Zarem.
The committee is scheduled to submit its recommendations to the council by June 9.
