A Florida judge approved stricter terms of probation for Dwight Gooden, ordering the New York Mets pitcher who fought with Tampa police four months ago to submit to random testing after completing a drug rehabilitation program.
Meanwhile, the chief assistant state attorney said Gooden’s involvement with cocaine came as no surprise to some law enforcement people.
“I know a lot of people in the community, including the law enforcement community, who have been concerned about his welfare for a couple of years,” Chris Hoyer said. He told Sports Illustrated that surveillance reports saying that Gooden had visited a notorious “drug bar” had been sent to Commissioner Peter Ueberroth’s office.
