Manhattan Beach : Need for Senior Housing

The City Council unanimously approved the concept of low-cost senior housing in Manhattan Beach, but postponed discussion of any financial or staff commitment until the city’s June budget hearing.

The housing endorsement followed the completion of a lengthy report compiled by a senior citizen housing committee appointed by the council last July.

The detailed report, which included results from a citizen survey, concluded that there “is an immediate and long-term need for affordable senior housing” in Manhattan Beach. The report also recommended six potential development sites--three of them vacant and surplus school property owned by the school district--for the project. Other sites include unused land owned by Chevron Land Development Co., the Los Angeles Flood Control District and the South Bay Union High School District.

Though specific cost factors for the development were not included in the report, the committee did request that the city “commit either dollars and/or non-cash contributions” to the project.
