Buchan, Brun Among Entrants in Olympic Classes Regatta
Nearly 150 boats with 250 sailors, among them one displaced Olympic gold medalist, will compete in the Olympic Classes Regatta starting today at Long Beach.
Carl Buchan of Median, Wash., who was Jonathan McKee’s crew on the Flying Dutchman that won the 1984 Games, will be at the helm of the Star boat Frolic that his father, Bill Buchan, sailed to a gold medal of his own in the same Olympics.
Also in the 13-boat Star fleet will be world champion Vince Brun and ’84 U.S. Olympic trials contender Mark Reynolds, both of San Diego.
All eight of the Olympic classes, including the new women’s 470 group, and three Pan American Games classes are scheduled to sail two races each day through Sunday on four courses--two each inside and outside the breakwater. The Alamitos Bay Yacht Club is host, with assistance from the Long Beach, Seal Beach and Shoreline clubs.
The top-ranked Soling sailors will be competing in the national regatta at Heath, Tex., early next week, and the Tornado leaders will be missing because of their North American regatta at St. Petersburg, Fla.
But the other fleets will have most of the top Olympic prospects, especially in the 470 dinghies. Morgan Reeser of Miami, Fla.; Dave Ullman of Balboa, and John Shadden of Long Beach are in the men’s 470 field, with world champion J.J. Isler of San Diego, USYRU champion Susan Dierdorff and Allison Jolly in the women’s.
