Nine U.S. diplomats have contracted AIDS over the last two years, and five have died from the disease, the government said in defending its new AIDS testing program for foreign service officers. The AIDS cases in the Foreign Service were revealed in court papers filed by the Justice Department against a lawsuit challenging the State Department’s testing program, which was started early this year. A public employees union representing the foreign service officers contends the tests violate the diplomats’ rights to privacy.
