Rancho P.V. : Scouts Planting Slide Area
The Portuguese Bend landslide area, which was left barren by grading aimed at stabilizing the slide, is getting some greenery, thanks to the labor of Boy and Girl Scouts.
Girl Scout Laurie Pullen organized 40 Cub Scouts from Silver Spur Elementary School, who planted 140 small trees donated to the city by the Los Angeles County Fire Department. Her troop leader, Hope Pullen, said Laurie undertook the project to earn the Gold Award, the highest recognition in Girl Scouting.

The Girl Scout who organized a tree-planting project in the Portuguese Bend Landslide area in Rancho Palos Verdes is Laurie Nissen. She was incorrectly identified in a story in Thursday’s South Bay section.
“Laurie wound up planting 50 trees herself, and she watered them all,†Pullen said. Laurie will be responsible for watering the young trees for four weekends and will get junior Scout leaders to help her.
Rancho Palos Verdes paid the Cubs $100 to plant the trees. They will use the money to buy American and California flags for their school, Pullen said. The work also counted toward their ecology merit badges.
Boy Scout Rich Pease, who is working for his Eagle Scout award, will carry out a similar project on May 9 with the help of his troop, according to Walter Warriner, city parks manager. They will plant the last 140 trees donated by the county.
