Fullerton : Euclid Street Closed by Rupture of Water Main

A water main burst early Tuesday, flooding a heavily traveled stretch of Euclid Street, blocking commuter traffic and leaving 20 homes without water for several hours, authorities said.
A city employee notified police about 1:30 a.m. that he had discovered a broken water main on Euclid beneath a railroad overpass near Williamson Avenue, Police Lt. Bud Lathrop said.
The underpass quickly became impassable, and officers blocked Euclid between Commonwealth Avenue and Valencia Drive to “all non-amphibious traffic,” Lathrop said.
City crews stopped the water flow, but the street remained flooded for several hours, police spokeswoman Kitty Jaramillo said.
Police issued a Sigalart in anticipation of morning rush-hour traffic along that stretch of Euclid, which is used by employees bound for nearby Hughes Aircraft.
Southbound lanes of Euclid were reopened at 9:30 a.m. and the flooding subsided by mid-afternoon. However, officers said northbound traffic lanes remained closed while workers continued to repair the main.
About 20 homes were without water between 4:30 a.m. and 8:30 a.m.
Another water main in Fullerton ruptured and flooded streets last week.
That one was “a major one that brought up all kinds of mud,” Jaramillo said. “This was bad only because Euclid gets flooded anyway in the rains, and when this water main broke, it’s downhill there. It just flooded out the whole street.”
