The Army is studying “blood doping,†a blood-boosting technique reportedly used by some athletes, as a possible tool for increasing the stamina of commandos in tropical climates, researchers said. Studies by the Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine concluded that subjects whose blood had been thickened with injection of oxygen-carrying red blood cells derived from their own blood experienced increased aerobic capabilities and a greater ability to perform in hostile environments.
