A baby born by Caesarean section to a woman killed in a traffic accident has died after surviving eight days, a spokeswoman for County-USC Medical Center said. Adelaida De La Cerda said the unnamed girl, who had been in “very critical and highly unstable condition†since birth Feb. 27, died late Saturday after being taken off life-support systems. The baby’s father made the decision to remove the support systems after learning that she was brain-dead, De La Cerda said. The girl weighed 3 pounds, 7 ounces. She was delivered after her mother, Evanthia Mokalis, 34, was taken to the medical center minutes after a fatal car accident. The mother was pronounced dead on arrival.
