Tokyo Area Snowstorm Leaves 5 Dead
TOKYO — A storm dumped up to 6.7 inches of snow on the Tokyo area, leaving five dead and at least 143 injured in accidents, the Metropolitan Fire Department said Sunday.
On Tokyo streets, 28 people slipped on snow-covered sidewalks, and 10 of them were hospitalized with broken legs, department officials said. Forty-eight people were injured in car accidents in the capital, they said.
In Saitama prefecture, north of Tokyo, snow and an early morning mist caused a 50-car pileup, blocking traffic on the Tohoku Expressway linking Tokyo to the north, Kyodo News Service said. One driver was killed and 40 others were injured in that accident, it said.
Four drivers were killed and 27 people injured in other snow-related road accidents around the capital, the news agency said.
