The San Francisco Opera has commissioned an opera based on the biblical legend of Esther. The opera, the first commissioned during the tenure of general manager Terence McEwen, will be done by composer Hugo Weisgall and librettist Charles Kondek. The National Endowment for the Arts will pay all costs for the project up to the production stage. The opera is scheduled for the 1991 season.
