Baca, Mannion Spark 16-2 Titan Win Over Grand Canyon
Mark Baca and Greg Mannion each drove in three runs to lead Cal State Fullerton to a 16-2 victory over Grand Canyon College Sunday afternoon in a nonconference baseball game at Fullerton.
Fullerton (8-8) had 11 singles and 2 doubles and scored in every inning except the seventh.
Larry Casian (1-1), a senior left-hander, pitched the first seven innings for his first victory of the season.
UC Irvine 11, San Francisco State 6--Mike Fay had a two-run triple and Don Nicholson followed with an RBI double as the Anteaters scored five runs in the bottom of the second. Fay was 2 for 4 with 2 RBIs and scored 2 runs and Nicholson was 3 for 4 with 2 RBIs and scored 2 runs.
Mike Sugar was 3 for 5 with 2 doubles for UC Irvine (7-11-1).
Craig Brink (2-3) pitched six innings for the victory and Kevin Kandalaft pitched the final three innings for his first save.
In men’s tennis:
UC Irvine 7, Minnesota 2--The Anteaters won five of six singles matches and two of three doubles matches at Miami.
No. 1 singles player Mark Kapland defeated Chuck Merzbacher, 6-2, 6-4, to improve his record to 16-6. No. 2 singles player Trevor Kronemann defeated Carlos Merickle, 6-4, 6-3, and is 17-8 this season.
In women’s tennis:
UC Irvine 5, Utah 1--The Anteaters won three singles matches and got defaults in two others for the victory in the Las Vegas.
Uma Rao defeated Pam Miller, 6-3, 6-2, for UC Irvine (6-10) and Kathy Rose defeated Linda Anderson, 6-4, 6-1. Courtney Weichsel defeated Susy Westphal, 6-0, 2-6, 6-3.
In the Long Beach Relays:
The UC Irvine women’s four-mile relay team of Judy McLaughlin, Nicole Ritchot, Buffy Rabbitt and Keeley King set a school and meet record with a time of 20:25.4.
Jennifer Abraham and King tied for first in the 3,000 meters with a time of 9:45.1. Lori Wilson (9:49.8) from UCI was third and teammate McLaughlin (9:53.5) was fourth.
