Pacific Coast Sectional Tennis : USD’s Choi and Farren Upset No. 6 Team

Peter Choi and Mark Farren of the University of San Diego upset the sixth-seeded team from Texas to advance in the 98th annual Pacific Coast Sectional Men’s Tennis Doubles Championships Friday at the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club.

Choi and Farren defeated Chip Leighton and Paul Koscielsky, 6-2, 0-6, 6-4, in the round of 64.

Winning their first two matches were top-seeded Charles Beckman and Royce Deppe of the University of Texas, second-seeded Rick Leach and Scott Melvill of USC, third-seeded Ted Scherman and Steve DeVries of Cal and fourth-seeded Brian Flowers and Woody Hunt, also of Cal.

Fifth-seeded Mark Jacobson and Scott Moody of Stanford were upset in the round of 32 by an unaffiliated team of William Moravec and Oren Denny from Long Beach, 7-6, 7-6.

The tournament continues today with the round of 16 at 9:30 a.m. and the quarterfinals at 12:30 p.m.
