SOUTHERN SECTION SOCCER PLAYOFFS : Loring, Wynalda Kick Westlake Into Semifinal Round
Steve Loring’s goal early in the second half broke a 2-2 tie and propelled the Westlake High boys soccer team to a 4-2 win over Bishop Montgomery on Friday in the quarterfinal round of the 4-A playoffs at Westlake. In the semifinal round on Tuesday, Westlake (22-1-2) plays West Torrance, a 1-0 winner over Long Beach Wilson on Friday.
Eric Wynalda, Westlake’s leading scorer, scored two goals. The first tied the game at 1-1 at the 18-minute mark and the second gave Westlake a 2-1 lead at halftime.
BOYS
Mater Dei 2, Royal 1--Paul Oldham scored with 12 seconds left as Mater Dei upset second-seeded Royal (23-2-2) in the quarterfinals of the 4-A playoffs at Mater Dei.
Agoura 5, Mesrobian 0--Eric Maki and Egan Forino scored all of Agoura’s goals and the defense limited Mesrobian to one shot in the 1-A quarterfinal match at Agoura.
Oak Park 2, Carpinteria 0--Todd Creason and Scott Gibbons each scored a goal as Oak Park (13-6-1) won the 1-A quarterfinal playoff match. In the semifinals, Oak Park plays Chadwick.
GIRLS
Agoura 2, Monrovia 0--Wendy Bennett had one goal and one assist as Agoura (19-1-3) won the quarterfinal match of the 2-A playoffs at Monrovia.
Alemany 3, Laguna Hills 0--Shannon Lambert scored two goals and Lisa Gill scored another to help Alemany (17-5-5) past previously unbeaten and top-seeded Laguna Hills in a 3-A quarterfinal game.
