Quakes Rattle Sierra, Santa Barbara Areas
REDWOOD CITY, Calif. — Two earthquakes rattled California on Friday as one temblor hit Point Arguello near Santa Barbara and another shook the Mammoth Lakes area, the U.S. Geological Survey said. No damage was reported.
Edna King, spokeswoman for the Geological Survey’s western regional headquarters here, said the Point Arguello earthquake, estimated at 3.7 on the Richter scale, was recorded at 2:43 p.m. It was centered 50 miles west of Santa Barbara, she said.
The eastern Sierra quake measured 4.2 and was reported at 8:24 a.m., with its epicenter about 10 miles south of Mammoth Lakes, King said.
