The Orange High School boys’ soccer team defeated Laguna Hills, 3-1, in a shootout Saturday at Orange to earn the top seed from the Pacific Coast League.
Laguna Hills is the No. 2 seed. The No. 3 seed is Woodbridge, which defeated Laguna Beach, 2-0. The Pacific Coast League championship ended in a four-way tie Friday, forcing Saturday’s matches to determine the league’s playoff participants.
Orange (8-3, 18-7-1) advanced to the shootout by defeating Laguna Beach, 7-2. Jim Vlcek and Joe Sanchez scored two goals each for the Panthers. David Cope scored two for Laguna Beach (6-4-2, 14-7-2).
Laguna Hills (8-3, 17-6-2) advanced by defeating Woodbridge (7-3-2, 11-9-2) in overtime, 4-3.
According to Southern Section rules, a league may only schedule a playoff match to determine its third-place team, so officials from Orange and Laguna Hills decided to have a shootout for first place.
In the shootout, Orange’s Vlcek, David Shill and Victor Esparza all scored goals. Jim Flemming scored Laguna Hills’ goal.
