What to Wear at Arts Center

Re Robert Peters’ letter (Feb. 8) “Dressing Up for the Arts Center”:
If I should go to the Performing Arts Center and see Robert Peters and other Performing Arts Center goers wearing “paint-smeared coveralls, ravaged blue jeans, soiled shirts (both male and female), dresses that appear to have wiped up the kitchen floors, etc.,” I will know that I am not looking at people who are “showing off.”
They would not be people with an “idiotic bent” who take an “utterly superficial approach to the arts.” They would be people whose emphasis is on “brains” and “sensitivity.” They would be people trying to show that Orange County can “grow up”--”enlightened, profound and intelligent.”
I must say that I would have never known this if I had not read Peters’ letter. However, I do feel some tolerance for those less enlightened, profound and intelligent who still think that work clothes are for working, soiled clothes are for laundry and formal clothes are for formal occasions.
