College Baseball : SDSU’s Erb Beats Cal Poly SLO, 9-4

SAN DIEGO — San Diego State preseason All-American pitcher Mike Erb made his 1987 debut Friday afternoon, pitching 6 no-hit innings before settling for a 9-4 victory over visiting Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. The Aztecs improved to 5-1 while Cal Poly San Luis Obispo fell to 2-5.
The Mustangs’ Scott Reaves broke the hitless streak with a solo home run in the seventh inning. Cal Poly San Luis Obispo scored three unearned runs off Erb in the eighth, including a two-run home run by Jeff Smith.
SDSU put the game away early, scoring five runs in the first inning. Nikco Riesgo was 2 for 4 with 2 RBIs to lead the Aztecs. The teams meet again today for a 1 p.m. game at Smith Field.
United States International University 16, Point Loma Nazarene College 2--Designated hitter Pat Rocco went 2 for 2 with 3 RBIs and third baseman Jerry Benazides was 2 for 3 with 1 RBI to lead USIU at Point Loma. The game was scheduled for nine innings but was called after seven because of darkness.
Jerry Hill hit a solo home run in the sixth inning for PLNC (0-4). Noel Bishop (1-1) pitched five innings, giving up one run and striking out eight for the Gulls (5-4). PLNC hosts Pomona-Pitzer in a doubleheader today at noon.
Southwestern College Tournament--Grossmont defeated Orange Coast College, 6-2, in the first-round of the tournament. Orange Coast defeated Citrus College 8-5 in another first-round game.
