DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Joe Young, 38, a mechanic from Richmond, Va., was killed in a six-car accident during the Komfort Koach 200 for small sedans Friday at Daytona International Speedway.
Young’s Chevrolet spun in an oil slick and was hit nearly head on by a car driven by Duell Sturgill, 37, a dentist from Staffordsville, Ky. Young was taken to Halifax Medical Center where he was declared dead of “multiple internal injuries.”
Sturgill was taken to the same hospital with broken legs.
This was the eighth year Young had driven in the Koach race, part of the Charlotte/Daytona Dash series. He is the 14th race driver to be killed at Daytona since the track opened in 1959.
Young is survived by his wife, Delores, and two children, Jody and Lisa.
