ORANGE COUNTY PREP BASKETBALL : Roundup : Ocean View Edges Westminster
Dalene Lawson hit a 15-foot jump shot with eight seconds remaining, lifting Ocean View High School to a 48-47 girls’ basketball victory Thursday night over Westminster at home. Westminster then missed a last-second shot. Lawson, who lead all scorers with 24, made 8 of 8 foul shots. Devon Akita led the Lions with 14. The Seahawks are 5-5 in league.
In other Sunset League action:
Edison 69, Huntington Beach 36--Kristi Smith led the Chargers (10-0, 25-1) with 24 points and Stacee Johnson and Claudia Morris added 14 each.
Marina 56, Fountain Valley 50--Marina rallied from a three-point deficit after three quarters to defeat the Barons at Fountain Valley, taking third place in the league. Dawn Charroin led the Vikings (6-4, 15-10) with 14 points and Temre Kuester added 13. Melissa Handley, who led the Barons with 18, fouled out early in the fourth as Marina began its comeback. Laurie DeHaven added 16 for the Barons (3-7, 12-14).
In the Angelus League:
Mater Dei 55, St. Joseph 52--Cori Martin made a turnaround jump shot with 40 seconds left, giving the Monarchs a three-point lead and Geri Gainey made two foul shots late in the game as Mater Dei (10-0, 21-6) clinched the league title, its fifth straight. Gainey led Mater Dei with 21 points and Kelly O’Brien added 17. Lisa Fernandez scored 25 to lead St. Joseph, which finished in second place with an 8-2 record.
In the Century League:
Canyon 59, Villa Park 55--Lisa Iino scored 22 points and Kari Erkenbrach added 14 to lead the Comanches to the victory at Canyon High School.
Canyon (6-4, 13-9), which led 35-28 at the half, also got 10 points from Randi Pankratz. Villa Park got 20 points from Susie Barnett, 18 from Dena Kurose and 11 from Laura Koss.
Foothill 64, El Modena 43--Najla Mitchell scored 18 points and Sue Davis added 14 to lead the Vanguards to the victory at El Modena.
Foothill (10-0, 21-3), which led only 22-20 at halftime, also got 13 rebounds from Mitchell and 10 rebounds and 11 assists from Ashley Selman. El Modena (3-7) was led by Barbie Olson (24 points) and Ginger Poat (10).
Santa Ana Valley 46, Santa Ana 26--Senior Susan Hatchett scored 26 points as Valley (7-3, 13-6) won at home. Regina Luckey had 12 rebounds and Sharon Murrell had 11 rebounds for the Falcons, who finish second in the league.
In the Empire League:
El Dorado 51, Pacifica 39--Julie Cooper scored 24 points and Mo Grimsmo added to lead the Golden Hawks to their only victory in their season finale at El Dorado.
El Dorado (1-13, 1-17), which had a 23-16 halftime lead, led the entire game.
In the Freeway League:
Fullerton 68, Buena Park 39--Heidi Shikuma scored a game-high 22 points as the Indians concluded their undefeated league season at Buena Park. Sabrina Welch added 21 points and 16 rebounds, and Vicki Silva scored 13 points and had 16 rebounds for Fullerton (10-0, 15-6). Felisha Benjamin scored 12 points to lead Buena Park (4-6, 11-10).
Troy 61, Sunny Hills 60--Senior Susan Guest scored 30 points and had 23 rebounds to lead the Warriors to the victory at Sunny Hills. Troy (4-5) also got 13 points from Amber Hayden, who made a foul shot 17 seconds left to the clinch the victory. Sunny Hills (4-6, 11-12) got 18 points from Kerri Towles and 16 from Katherine Stedman. The Warriors can secure a playoff spot if they beat La Habra tonight. If they lose, they will be in a three-way tie with La Habra and Sunny Hills.
In the Garden Grove League:
Bolsa Grande 36, Los Amigos 25--Bolsa Grande (5-5), led by Doreen Day’s 11 points, clinched third place with the victory. Kim Magdaleno scored nine to lead Los Amigos (4-6).
La Quinta 83, Rancho Alamitos 29--Sue Paulsen scored 26 points and had 8 rebounds and Kris Takayama had 17 points and 8 assists as the league champion Aztecs won at home. La Quinta (10-0, 17-5) has won 11 straight games and six straight league titles. Rancho Alamitos finished 0-10 in league.
In the Orange League:
Brea-Olinda 81, Magnolia 50--Susan Tousey scored 19 and Kristin McPhee added 16 as Brea (9-1, 20-4) won at Magnolia. Dawne Borum scored 24 and Katie Donica 21 for Magnolia (6-4, 18---6) which finishes third in league.
In Pacific Coast League:
Woodbridge 90, Laguna Hills 28--The Warriors (9-1, 19-7) won the league championship outright by defeating the Hawks at Irvine. Woodbridge was led by Kathy Millat, who scored 22 points, making 8 of 11 from the field and 6 of 6 from the foul line. She also had seven steals. Nina Hansen had 14 points and 10 assists. Laguna Hills’ Wendy Hensel scored 14 points.
Estancia 31, Tustin 30--Tam Young made a 10-foot jump shot with 15 seconds remaining as Estancia upset league champion Tustin at Estancia. Shannon Suzuki led second-place Estancia (8-2, 14-8) with 9 points and Erica Goodman added 13 rebounds. Tricia Andres led Tustin (9-1) with 12 points.
Newport Harbor 50, Corona del Mar 37--The Sailors (5-5, 11-10) were led by freshman guard Stacey Giem’s 19 points at Newport Harbor. Sarah Andrus had 16 rebounds and Newport Harbor teammate Jenn Ryan added 15 rebounds. Kiki Stoveken scored 16 points for Corona del Mar (2-8).
University 48, Saddleback 42--Katie Ho scored a basket and made two free throws late in the fourth quarter, staving off the Roadrunners, who had cut a 10-point deficit to two. Shelley Davis had 12 points and 15 rebounds for University (6-4, 9-13), which took third place in the league.
In the South Coast League:
El Toro 59, Irvine 39--Elaine Youngs scored 20 and Andrea Young added 18 for the Chargers (9-1, 19-7) who clinched at least a tie for first. Cindi Edwards scored 12 to lead Irvine.
In a Collegiate League boys’ game:
St. Margaret’s 93, Cal School for the Deaf-Riverside 67--Mark Campaigne had 30 points and 15 rebounds as St. Margaret’s won. Chris Cooper added 24 for the Tartans (7-0, 17-1).
