Double Olympic champion Thomas Wassberg of Sweden ended two years of frustration by winning the first gold medal at the Nordic Ski World Championships at Oberstdorf, West Germany.
He won the 30-kilometer (18.6-mile) cross-country race in one hour 24 minutes 30.2 seconds. Finland’s Aki Karvonen was second in 1:26.24.0.
