Tigers’ Morris to Get $1.8 Million
DETROIT — Pitcher Jack Morris, who agreed to stay with the Detroit Tigers and take his chances with salary arbitration after being rebuffed as a free agent, today was awarded a $1.85-million salary for this year by an arbitrator.
The award was the highest since salary arbitration was instituted for major league ball players. The Tigers had offered $1.35 million. Morris, who has won more games in the 1980s than any other major league pitcher, becomes the game’s highest paid hurler along with Fernando Valenzuela of the Dodgers, who also will be paid $1.85 million this year.
