Officials at Milan’s Brera art gallery admitted Thursday that a 1917 Amedeo Modigliani painting worth $1.2 million had been stolen without their noticing. The oil painting, “Portrait of a Man,� disappeared on Monday but gallery staff, thinking it had been moved during building work, waited 24 hours before realizing it had been stolen and calling the police. Police said they believed the painting was stolen to order as the thieves, who foiled a sophisticated alarm system and were unnoticed by security guards, ignored a valuable Pablo Picasso picture hanging next to it.
