Tennis Roundup : McEnroe, Connors Win in U.S. Indoor

John McEnroe admits he’s not at top form, but says he’s getting closer.

McEnroe wasn’t at his best but still beat Phil Annacone, 6-3, 6-4, Wednesday in the second round of the U.S. Indoor Championships at Memphis, Tenn.

“The mental and physical combination is not there yet, but I believe deep down that it can get better,” said the fifth-seeded McEnroe, still trying to find his game after a six-month layoff last year. “I feel like if I play well, I can go out there and play anyone.”

Annacone, ranked 43rd in the world, eliminated McEnroe in the first round of the 1986 U.S. Open.

Second-seeded Jimmy Connors also won his second-round match, trouncing Andrei Chesnokov of the Soviet Union, 6-1, 6-3.

In a trio of upsets, Sergio Casal of Spain scored a 6-4, 6-3 victory over sixth-seeded Emilio Sanchez, also of Spain, Eliot Teltscher beat No. 15-seeded Milan Srejber of Czechoslovakia, 6-2, 7-5, and Amos Mansdorf of Israel knocked off 13th-seeded Tim Wilkison, 6-4, 6-4.

Top-seeded Hana Mandlikova needed only 51 minutes to beat Elna Rinach of South Africa, 6-3, 6-2, in a first-round match at the $150,000 Virginia Slims of California women’s tournament at San Francisco.

Second-seeded Kathy Rinaldi advanced by disposing of Anne White, 6-1, 7-6, in a second-round match. Rinaldi won the final three points of the tiebreaker.

Australians Colin Dibley and Ross Case each posted straight-set victories to reach the quarterfinals of a $40,000 35-and-over men’s tournament at Indian Wells. Dibley beat Erik Van Dillen, 6-3, 6-3, and Case turned back Charlie Pasarell, 6-3, 6-3.
