Former Padre LaMarr Hoyt Is Released From Prison Camp After Serving 38 Days

Former San Diego Padre pitcher LaMarr Hoyt was released Wednesday from a Florida prison camp, where he served 38 days of a 45-sentence on a misdemeanor drug conviction, assistant prison superintendent Mike Pugh said.

Hoyt, 32, was released a week before his sentence was to expire because all inmates serving time at a minimum security facility such as the Eglin Air Force Base prison camp get three days “extra good time” a month, Pugh said.

Hoyt also was given credit for spending two days in jail after his October arrest for drug possession.

The right-hander emerged from prison a free agent. While serving his sentence, the Padres waived Hoyt and claimed he voided his contract by violating the good citizenship clause in his contract.

Hoyt had three years left on a contract paying him approximately $1 million a year. The Major League Players Assn. has filed a grievance on behalf of Hoyt against the Padres.

Meanwhile, Hoyt still faces possible disciplinary action from baseball Commissioner Peter Ueberroth. A spokesman for the commissioner said Ueberroth would decide Hoyt’s playing status in a week.
