Two pilots heading toward the North Pole in a historic effort to fly a single-engine plane around the world pole-to-pole made a safe emergency landing on an Arctic island because of a damaged wing. The pilots landed their propeller-driven plane, the Arctic Tern, at tiny Mould Bay in the Northwest Territories and planned to examine the wing to learn whether the damage was serious enough to scuttle the mission. They had planned to land at Oslo, Norway, this morning.
