Playboy’s Advertisement on Chinese New Year

The Playboy advertisement in The Times (Jan. 28), celebrating the Chinese New Year of the Rabbit, was seriously flawed.
While reading the newspaper that day some of the guys at work decided to copy the characters on a marker board to surprise a Chinese woman who works with us.
After getting our best artist to copy the characters, she looked at our artistry, giggled and told us that the characters were very well done but had been displayed in reverse order.
Checking the paper, we confirmed that the characters were copied in the identical order in which they appeared.
As Kon-Lee Fern, our Chinese co-worker told us, “You can read Chinese from right to left or left to right, but never from bottom to top, always top to bottom.”
