American, Japanese to Share Math Award

TEL AVIV — A Hungarian-born American and a Japanese have been named co-winners of the 1987 Wolf Prize in mathematics, the Wolf Foundation announced Thursday.
The recipients of the $100,000 prize are Prof. Peter D. Lax, 71, director of the mathematics and computing laboratory at New York University’s Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences, and Prof. Kiyoshi Ito, 72, of the Research Institute for Mathematical Sciences, Kyoto University.
The two will share the prize for their work in pure and applied mathematics.
