Britain’s Conservative government is preparing to enact special police powers after 153 people were injured in violent demonstrations outside a London printing plant over the weekend. Home Secretary Douglas Hurd told the House of Commons that powers contained in a 1986 act allowing police to restrict demonstrations will be brought into effect within the next few weeks. The weekend violence erupted after a march by an estimated 12,000 protesters on the first anniversary of press baron Rupert Murdoch’s move to Wapping to publish his newspapers at a new high-technology plant. The move resulted in the firing of 5,500 print workers.
