Japanese auto and truck production declined.
The reduction last year was the first since 1982, because of the effects of the strong yen on exports, the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Assn. said. Japan in 1986 produced nearly 12.3 million four-wheel vehicles, down 0.1% from the previous year, officials said. The association said domestic shipments offset the decline in exports, increasing 2.7% to more than 5.7 million units. Last year, Japan exported about 6.6 million cars and trucks, or about 54% the nation’s total output, the association said.
