Convicted killer Alton Coleman, 31, was found guilty in the death of Vernita Wheat, 9, of Kenosha, Wis., whose disappearance marked the start of a seven-week Midwest crime spree in 1984. The Circuit Court jury in Waukegan, Ill., where the girl’s body was discovered, found Coleman guilty of aggravated kidnaping and murder. He was sentenced to death earlier for two murders in Ohio and one in Indiana.
