Gominski Leads Canyon in Five Counties Wrestling

Canyon High wrestling Coach Gary Bowden said there were several reasons his team was able to win the Five Counties Wrestling Tournament Saturday night. But none was as surprising as Ken Gominski’s semifinal upset of Aaron Cantrall.

Cantrall (194 pounds), who finished third in the state championships last season for Vacaville High School, overpowered Gominski at the start of the match, but couldn’t score effectively.

Gominski beat Andy Silvestro of Simi Valley for the championship. His two victories gave Canyon eight points, which made the difference as the Comanches won the 34-team tournament over second-place Poway of San Diego, 138-131.5. Overfelt finished third with 119 points.

Brett Schultz (122 pounds) also finished first for Canyon, beating Sal Rodriguez of Monte Vista to increase his record to 25-0 this season. The Comanches’ Greg Monteith (168 pounds) took second place, losing to El Dorado High’s Todd Tomazic, the defending state champion. Tomazic is 16-0 this season after missing the first two weeks of the season with a knee injury.

Bryon Schultz (129 pounds), Brett’s twin brother, took third place after losing to defending state champion Lyndon Campbell in the semifinal, 8-4.

Of the other Orange County high schools in the tournament: Loara finished 10th with 74.5 points; El Dorado was 11th with 69; Valencia 21st with 46 points, and Fountain Valley and Edison tied for 26th with 32 points.
