Markus Wasmeier of West Germany won his first-ever World Cup downhill ski race at Wengen, Switzerland. Wasmeier, 23, was timed in 2 minutes 29.62 seconds on the 2.5-mile long Lauberhorn course.
Karl Alpiger of Switzerland was second in 2:30.71, and Franz Heinzer was third in 2:31.17.
Primin Zurbriggen of Switzerland, who finished ninth, leads the downhill standings with 95 points. Wasmeier has 83, and Heinzer is next at 82. Wasmeier is second in the overall standings, with 157 points to Zurbriggen’s 172.
