Mock Jet Hijacking in India Mistaken for the Real Thing

NEW DELHI — Security forces posing as Sikh terrorists staged a mock hijacking today to test security responses, but airport officials mistook it for the real thing, ordered a red alert and surrounded the jet with heavily armed police.
Civil Aviation Minister Jagdish Tytler, the nation’s top aviation official, said the exercise was conducted to find out “whether everything works and to test the security situation.”
He said only he and one other ministry official knew in advance of the exercise, which caused a flurry of conflicting reports for about 4 1/2 hours.
