JOHANNESBURG, South Africa — Nicole Hohowsky, 2, died early today in a Johannesburg hospital one year, almost to the hour, after she underwent a liver transplant in Los Angeles, her father said.
Nicole captured the hearts of South Africans as a fund-raising campaign collected more than $250,000 for her trip to America and the operation last Jan. 12 at UCLA Medical Center. Nicole’s parents refused last week to send her back to UCLA for a second operation, saying she had suffered enough.
