A newborn gray whale washed up dead at San Gregorio State Beach hours after sheriff’s deputies and volunteers freed it from shallow water where it had been trapped. “We did all we could,” said Mary Jane Schramm of the Marine Mammal Center. “It was a newborn, maybe a matter of a few hours old.” The 15-foot baby apparently had been born prematurely as its mother headed south to Mexico, she said, and the mother may have been sick or stressed by recent storms in the area.
