Countywide : Nestande Takes Over as Supervisors’ Chairman
Bruce Nestande took over as chairman of the county Board of Supervisors on Tuesday, and suggested that toll roads and a tax increase be considered as methods of raising money for transportation.
Nestande also said he has started discussions with the incoming president of the county chapter of the California League of Cities about setting up a committee to explore how to address regional problems.
“We must streamline and create this viable institutional arrangement that is going to allow us to deal with the countywide problems like transportation, the airports, the roads, the air quality, the toxic emergency responses and so on and so forth,†Nestande said.
Nestande said there will not be sufficient state and federal money for new roads needed in the county, forcing officials to consider whether tolls should be imposed on some roads and whether the voters should be asked again to approve a tax increase to finance transportation projects.
A 1983 ballot measure proposing an increase in the sales tax in the county for transportation projects was defeated. Nestande said that a better explanation to the voters of the need for the money could help it pass.
Nestande succeeded Ralph B. Clark, who retired from the Board of Supervisors, as chairman.
