College Basketball Roundup : Seikaly Scores 29 Points to Help Syracuse Stay Undefeated
Rony Seikaly scored a career-high 29 points and grabbed 10 rebounds Monday night to lead undefeated and fifth-ranked Syracuse to an 89-85 Big East basketball victory over Providence.
Providence led, 42-39, at intermission, but the Orangemen, 13-0 overall and 2-0 in the Big East, stayed close and came alive midway through the second half in the game played at Providence, R.I.
With 7:31 left, the Friars led, 72-65, before Howard Triche led Syracuse’s rally, scoring 12 of his 16 points as the Orangemen took the lead and held on for the victory. Four of Triche’s points down the stretch were from the foul line.
Providence (9-3 and 0-2) outrebounded Syracuse, 52-41, and was 7 for 17 in three-point attempts. Syracuse was 0 for 5.
Iowa 78, Wisconsin 63--Ed Horton scored 16 points, and Brad Lohaus added 15 to help the second-ranked Hawkeyes extend the longest winning streak in the nation to 14 games with a Big Ten win at Iowa City.
Wisconsin (10-5) stayed within six points until guard Mike Heineman and center J.J. Weber were benched with four fouls midway through the second half. Iowa (14-0), built a 10-point lead, but the Badgers pulled within five when Heineman and Weber returned.
Purdue 89, Michigan 77--Troy Lewis scored a career-high 39 points, including 16 of his team’s 18 points midway through the first half, to lead the No. 6 Boilermakers at West Lafayette, Ind.
Lewis’ point total was the highest by a Purdue player since Joe Barry Carroll, now with the NBA’s Golden State Warriors, scored 41 in 1979.
The Boilermakers are 10-1 overall and 2-0 in the Big Ten. The Wolverines are 5-6 and 0-2.
Duke 82, William & Mary 46--Reserve guard Quin Snyder scored 19 points as the 17th-ranked Blue Devils extended their winning streak to nine games.
The Blue Devils (10-1) recorded their 21st straight home victory and 31st straight over a nonconference opponent. William & Mary dropped to 2-7.
Duke scored 13 straight points early in the second half to put the game out of reach at 55-25 with 13:46 remaining. During that stretch, Snyder scored five points, including a three-point field goal. Billy King also had five points, including a three-point play.
Navy 91, East Carolina 66----Center David Robinson became the first Navy basketball player to surpass 2,000 points while scoring 31 to lead the 15th-ranked Middies to a Colonial Athletic Assn. victory at Annapolis, Md.
Robinson keyed an 11-point run early in the second half that helped Navy turn a 50-32 lead into a 29-point advantage.
The 7-foot 1-inch senior, who finished the game with 2,019 career points, made 13 of 19 shots. He also had 16 rebounds and blocked 7 shots as the Middies, 7-2 overall, improved to 2-0 in the CAA. East Carolina is 6-5 and 0-2.
Temple 77, George Washington 73--Senior guard Nate Blackwell scored 20 points, including a key jump shot with 57 seconds left, as the eighth-ranked Owls survived a scare to beat the Colonials in an Atlantic 10 game at Philadelphia.
Two free throws by George Washington’s Max Blank tied the score at 73 with 1:35 to play. But Blackwell made his 14-foot jumper to move Temple ahead, 75-73, and Howard Evans added two free throws with three seconds left to secure the victory.
Temple is 13-1 overall and 3-0 in conference play. George Washington is 4-7 and 1-1.
Louisville 92, Nevada Reno 77--Herbert Crook scored 18 points to lead five players in double figures as the Cardinals beat the Wolf Pack at Louisville.
Nevada Reno (6-7) went scoreless for almost four minutes in the first half while Louisville (6-6) scored 10 straight points and took a 32-19 lead on Mark McSwain’s dunk with 9:20 left in the period.
Mississippi 73, Louisiana State 63--Junior Roderick Barnes scored 23 points, and senior Joe Ayers had 20 to give first-year coach Ed Murphy his first Southeastern Conference win as the Rebels beat the Tigers at Jackson, Miss.
In women’s college basketball:
Long Beach 117, UNLV 84--Cindy Brown scored a career-high 42 points to lead the 49er women to a win over Rebels in a Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. game at Las Vegas.
Brown, a senior center, made 15 of 22 shots from the floor and 12 of 13 from the free-throw line for the seventh-ranked 49ers (9-1 overall and 1-0 in the PCAA).
Brown also had 10 rebounds and 9 assists as Long Beach led, 62-33, by halftime. Long Beach guard Penny Toler contributed 26 points and 9 assists.
Angela Christian scored 20 points and had 10 rebounds for UNLV (6-4, 1-1).
UCLA 67, Notre Dame 65--The Bruins, after squandering a 17-point halftime lead, needed a Dora Dome jump shot from the top of the key with 1:34 remaining in overtime to defeat the Irish at Pauley Pavilion.
Dome’s shot gave the Bruins a 64-63 lead, and Michele Wootton sealed the win with three free throws in the final minute. Dome had 18 points to lead the Bruins, and Wootton and Kristi Moore each had 12.
Notre Dame (3-7), which trailed at halftime, 44-27, rallied to take a 59-57 lead with 1:26 remaining in regulation. But UCLA (7-4) tied the game and had a chance to win in regulation when Wootton made a shot at the buzzer and was fouled. But the game went into overtime when Wootton missed her free- throw attempt.
