Arizona State a Winner in Its First Rose Bowl

Jeff Van Raaphorst passed for two touchdowns as Arizona State, making its first Rose Bowl appearance, rallied to upset fourth-ranked Michigan, 22-15, Thursday before 103,168 fans in Pasadena.

The victory was the sixth straight and 12th in 13 years for the Pacific 10 Conference over the Big Ten in the Rose Bowl. It was the seventh defeat in eight Rose Bowl games for Bo Schembechler-coached Michigan teams.

Kent Bostrom kicked field goals of 37, 27 and 25 yards for the Sun Devils.

At the Florida Citrus Bowl in Orlando, Fla., Auburn spotted USC an early touchdown but blanked the Trojans for the final 55 minutes and won, 16-7, in Ted Tollner’s final game as USC coach.

Linebacker Marcus Cotton scored USC’s touchdown on a 24-yard run with a pass interception.

At the Orange Bowl in Miami, Spencer Tillman and Jamelle Holieway each ran for two touchdowns, and third-ranked Oklahoma overpowered Arkansas, 42-8.

At the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans, quarterback Steve Taylor ran for one touchdown and passed for another as Nebraska defeated LSU, 30-15.

At the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, Ohio State intercepted five passes thrown by Texas A & M’s Kevin Murray, and linebackers Chris Spielman and Michael Kee returned two of them for touchdowns in a 28-12 victory.
