The Southland’s first recorded earthquake of the year hit the remote, sparsely populated Morongo Valley, a spokesman for Caltech in Pasadena said. The temblor, centered about 17 miles northwest of Palm Springs, registered 3.6 on the Richter scale. Several New Year’s Eve celebrants in Palm Springs telephoned local radio stations shortly after midnight to report the quake, but there were no reports of damage or injuries.
