PARAMOUNT GETS GOLDEN GIFTS WITH TOP 3 CHRISTMAS GROSSERS
“The Golden Child†edged “Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home†as the top-grossing movie over the four-day Christmas weekend. But the big surprise was that “Crocodile Dundee,†a movie in its fourth month of release, jumped all the way up to third.
None of this was bad news for Paramount Pictures. The studio with the year’s golden touch released all three films. “The Golden Child†took in $10.1 million, “Star Trek IV†did $9.2 million and “Crocodile Dundee†added $5.9 million.
Sidney Lumet’s thriller, “The Morning After,†had a strong $5-million opening in 955 theaters for 20th Century Fox and Lorimar, while the other new release, Universal’s “Brighton Beach Memoirs,†managed only $2.6 million in 775 theaters.
The top 10 movies: “The Golden Child,†“Star Trek IV,†“Crocodile Dundee,†“Three Amigos!†($5.5 million), “The Morning After,†“Heartbreak Ridge†($5 million), “Little Shop of Horrors†($5 million), “Lady and the Tramp†($5 million), “An American Tail†($3 million), “Brighton Beach Memoirs.â€
