The State : San Francisco Considers Olympics Bid
The U.S. Olympic Committee has invited San Francisco to submit a bid for the 1996 Summer Games, but Mayor Dianne Feinstein said the city first must decide whether it can afford to stage the event. “We have to consider whether it would be wise to host the games,” Feinstein said. “The cost to the city could be enormous.” Only the 1984 games in Los Angeles, the 1948 games in London and the 1932 games in Los Angeles have shown a profit or broken even.
