The City Council has donated $2,000 to a branch of the county library on condition that a library support group raises an additional $4,000.
The council donated the money to the Leland R. Weaver branch of the county library in South Gate.
The Friends of the Leland R. Weaver Library had requested a $6,000 donation to purchase a videocassette system for continuing adult education.
The 43-cassette system prepares students to take a test leading to a General Education Diploma, equivalent to a high school diploma.
The support group was not given a time limit in which to raise the money, said Shari Petresky, senior librarian.
